about us

On March 16, 1911, a three-year old Sunday school program realized their ultimate goal when the First Presbyterian Church of Bessemer was chartered by the Presbytery of Shenango.   The hope was to provide an English-speaking congregation for a rapidly growing industrial town. Within its first several years, the church also grew quickly, beginning a profound history of sharing and living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Bessemer community.

The Bessemer congregation experienced its share of highs and lows over its 110 year existence, even coming close to its demise in the mid-2000’s. However, through a period of great prayer and discernment, the congregation re-discovered its mission in the community and the world. Since then, Bessemer Church has realized its mission which extends beyond its walls of the building to engage both the surrounding community and mission partners across the globe. Bessemer Presbyterian Church is a small but vital congregation which is true to its original mission:  to serve the Bessemer Community by proclaiming and living out the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Indeed, BPC is a church of resurrection hope, and a testimony to the power of the Holy Spirit to breathe new life even into situations of death and despair.  In all we do, we seek to offer that same resurrection hope and power of the Holy Spirit.   We seek to give a glimpse of the Kingdom of God that Jesus ushered into this world, and to allow the Kingdom to break into the lives of individuals and the life of our community.
